In 2011, a bill was introduced in the NJ state legislature allowing defendants to apply for what is known as “PTI” short for Pre-trial Intervention.

If a defendant is approved for the program, and completes it according to the terms set forth by the Court, the individual is spared a criminal conviction.

Although the defendant will still have an arrest record which could possibly be expunged, the defendant’s charges would be dismissed.

Currently PTI is only offered at the Superior Court level for indictable offenses.  As a result, individuals who are charged with less serious crimes in Municipal Court cannot take advantage of this program.

In November 2012, Governor Christie recently vetoed the bill because according to him, the fines associated with the PTI program in the Municipal Courts were exorbitant.  He indicated that he would sign the Bill otherwise.
